Jay and I initially wouldn't hear of our weekend being ruined by Irene. So Thursday night, we scooped him up after work and drove down to the Cape. Jay planned to work from the Cape house on Friday. I thought I would take the kids to the beach then get ready for everyone to arrive and start the festivities.
Turns out, Irene didn't allow us to relax much. By the time we woke on Friday, we decided we would leave early Saturday morning. My parents, Dana and Elliott would not be coming at all.
Our last beach weekend turned into our last beach day and we made the most of it. We had a nice breakfast in the backyard.
And Remy made a cool fort:
Then we went to the beach...which was pretty empty:
Jay spent a little bit hanging out with us then went back to the house to work. I lasted down there less than an hour with all three kids.....we decided to try having fun in the backyard for a bit instead. That worked out well because the kids found a worm to watch:
Jay took full advantage of his lunch break:
Later we went back to the beach again, then out to dinner at a taco place Auntie Molly and Uncle Bri discovered when they were in town:
After that, it was bedtime for the kiddies and hurricane prep for Jay and I. We took in all the outside furniture and packed up the van for an early morning departure. We were on the road at 6:30am and we still hit traffic! The talk of closing the Cape bridges really made people react.
We were home safe and sound when Irene made her way up here. My dreams of being home bound and getting every stitch of laundry done and all the school food shopping complete were crushed when we lost power though. It wasn't the weekend we planned...or re-planned...but we are all safe. And now...preparing for school to start tomorrow.
Do you think we could get away with calling Labor Day Weekend the last weekend of summer instead?
